Space Radiation

SEC will be hosting a special day long workshop on "Space Radiation impacts on airlines", on 15 April 2002. It will be held on the Federal campus in Boulder Colorado at 325 Broadway. This is the same location as the Space Weather Week conference, which starts on Tuesday and runs until noon on Friday. The workshop will start at 9 AM and run until 4 PM on Monday the 15th of April. There will be no registration fee for this day long workshop. However, it would be beneficial to let Ron Zwickl know who is planning on attending, as the room capacity is limited to about 60 people.

Our intent is to gather together in one place at the same time representatives from four different groups to discuss the impacts of space weather, specifically cosmic radiation and solar radiation storms, on airlines and their crews. The four groups are: NOAA's Space Environment Center, US Airlines, FAA radiation groups, and European Airlines. Each of these groups has a vested interest in this problem. Based on the comments received from a number of you the areas to be covered during the workshop are best
summarized by Bryn Jones from Virgin Atlantic Airways:

  1. Discuss the Risks to the industry
    The primary focus of this workshop would include areas of aircrew and passenger radiation exposure, and impacts on avionics. While there will be some discussion of impacts on communications and navigation they will not be the prime focus of this workshop. There will be some additional discussion of these topics during Space Weather Week.
  2. Education
    Overviews of Space Weather variability and of the current FAA work on developing a radiation alert product will be presented.
  3. Research
    We are looking for presentations on current research on radiation impacts on airlines. At least one European group will attend to present some recent work.
  4. Utilizing space weather services
    This would include practical, regulatory and safety issues.
  5. Open Discussion session on issues raised during the workshop (last hour).

The above list of topic areas is the starting point. We will be putting together an agenda for the meeting and are looking for additional input. If you have specific requests for either a topic to discuss, or a presentation please let me now within the next week.

If you plan to attend or know someone from your organization who will be attending, could you please send me an e-mail. As stated above the room has limited seating.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

MURI WORKSHOP ON MAGNETIC FIELD FORECASTING

A mini MURI workshop on magnetic field forecasting is scheduled for Monday April 15th (i.e., the day before the start of the NOAA/SEC 2002 Space Weather Week) in the David Skaggs building. The workshop will be held in Room 2C-406 and Is tentatively scheduled to run from 1:00 P.M. to 6:00P.M.

The workshop, limited to parties interested in working on the solar Magnetic field data available in real-time and the general subject "Real time availability of magnetic field data sets and the best way to observe
CMEs using currently available data sets" is expected to take a portion of the day Monday April 15, and is intended to expand upon and update members to the Subjects discussed above. As space is limited, people interested in attending should first contact Dr. Bernard Jackson (UCSD Center for Astrophysics and
Space Sciences) via e-mail (bvjackson@ucsd.edu) to confirm whether there is sufficient room for additional attendees.

SXI in Space Weather Operations

This meeting will be a tutorial and workshop on the operational use of SXI in space weather forecasting. The meeting is planned to run for about 4 hours on the afternoon of Monday April 15th, 2002. The primary intent is to train forecasters and operators at NOAA, NASA, and the USAF in the use of GOES-12 SXI data and its associated software tools. Though the main focus will is not on research users, there will be coverage of public web resources and data analysis tools. If planned attendance indicates, we may expand the segment on public resources.

Several workstations will be made available for hands-on training will be available. Attendees will be able to work with archival SXI data and 'live' playback data. If SXI is operating, real-time data will be available.

Topics to be covered will include:

* SXI instrument and operations overview
* SXI image interpretation
* Operations software tutorial
* Public web resources and software

Vendor Meeting

Vendors will have a chance to meet together and with SEC staff at an evening meeting. The meeting will discuss progress in the industry, partnerships with SEC, and plans. A vendor, in our definition, is anyone who is using space weather information to provide a service to others (for profit, not for profit, government, or whomever).

The Vendor Dinner and Meeting will be held Thursday night, April 18, at NCAR, as it has often been in the past. Everyone will be responsible for paying for their dinner (collected that night). If you plan to attend, please let Barbara Poppe know if you plan to attend this evening meeting. (Barbara.Poppe@noaa.gov, 303-497-3992).

Space Environment Center

Celebrates Gary Heckman's Long Career

Gary Heckman has been a pillar in the fields of space weather forecasting, research, and advocacy for 40 years. Help us celebrate that career at a dinner in his honor, April 15, 2002, in Boulder, Colorado.

One day in advance of Space Weather Week 2002, this dinner will draw colleagues from the impending conference, from Boulder and the NOAA staff, and from friends around the country. The ceremony will in fact be a history of SEC from its infancy, with various speakers recounting the important steps along the way.

The dinner will be held at the Millennium Hotel Ballroom, 1345 285y Street Boulder, Colorado, on Monday, April 15, 2002, 7-10 p.m. The cost of the dinner is $20, payable in advance. Checks should be made payable to UCAR and mailed to Candice Curtiss, NOAA/SEC, 325 Broadway, Boulder, CO, 80305. You may also pay $20 cash or check at the door.

Space will be limited, so please reserve your space soon. RSVP to Candice curtiss by April 9 at 303-497-3204 or Candice.L.Curtiss@noaa.gov. Please also select your entree preference.
