Previous Status Reports

2007 March 27: After six months of post-launch testing (PLT), GOES-13 SXI was placed in on-orbit storage on January 5, 2007. It will remain in storage until either thruster fuel is depleted or instrument failure occurs on one of the two currently operational GOES satellites.

In the interim, a detector anomaly that occurred in conjunction with an X-flare in December 2006 is being investigated and operational remedies are being developed. A calibrated set of the imagery taken during PLT is anticipated to be available in the Fall of 2007. Notice of availability will be broadcast to the community, as well as on this website.

2007 January 16: The GOES-13 Post Launch Test (PLT) ended January 5, 2007. The spacecraft was put in storage mode until it is designated to replace the primary or secondary GOES satellite.

2006 July 6:Today the GOES-13 SXI successfully obtained its first solar images. Post-launch testing will continue through July. Preliminary patrol image sequences, which will be interleaved with test sequences, will be available shortly.

***** GOES-N SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED *****

2006 June 7: The GOES-13 (GOES-N, before launch) Solar X-ray Imager was successfully launched May 24, 2006, at about 6pm EDT.

The SXI instrument will be turned on Sunday, June 10. It will undergo extensive testing for about a month, then will continue with operations-like patrol imaging for the remainder of the post-launch test period (PLT, which will last about 180 days overall).

After that, the GOES-N (13) spacecraft will be put into on-orbit storage until one of the currently operational GOES spacecraft suffers a major failure or operational degradation.

Keep watching this space for further developments.

2006 May 24: The GOES-N (to be renamed GOES-13 when put into full operation) Solar X-ray Imager continues to await launch at Cape Canaveral. The launch date is now set for TODAY, May 24, 2006, about 6pm EDT.

2006 Jan 9: The GOES-N (to be renamed GOES-13 when put into full operation) Solar X-ray Imager continues to await launch at Cape Canaveral. The strike by Boeing launch workers shows no resolution as yet, and the earliest possible launch date is now listed as 2006 Mar 05.

The SXI instrument will be turned on 22 days after launch. It will undergo extensive testing for roughly about a month, then will continue with operations-like patrol imaging for the remainder of the post-launch test period (PLT, which will last about 180 days overall).

After that, the GOES-N (13) spacecraft will be put into on-orbit storage until one of the currently operational GOES spacecraft suffers a major failure or operational degradation.
